white people get to drive away

About a year ago I was talking to my dad, (who is white), on the phone, and he shared with me that he was recently stopped by a police officer for turning right at a red light where there was a sign that said NO RIGHT TURN ON RED.

"I couldn't believe he pulled me over!!!" my dad said to me, real anger an incredulity in his voice. "I had been waiting at that light forever, the light wouldn't turn, so I turned right anyway, I was tired of waiting! Next thing I know I see the police lights and I'm thinking you have to be kidding me! So he comes up to my window and asks me if I had seen the sign, and I said 'YES I saw it! and I had waited and waited for the light to change and when it didn't I turned right anyway. How long do you expect me to wait if the light doesn't change? This is not a big deal, why would you waste your time pulling me over for this?!'"

My dad told me he "put the cop in his place" for pulling him over, even though my dad broke the law. Yesterday Philando Castile, a black man, was shot and killed, in front of his daughter, while reaching for his wallet after being pulled over for a broken taillight. He was complying, he was following orders, and he is dead. My dad argued with a police officer, and he drove away without a ticket. He drove away period. I know plenty of white people who hate the police, but I don't know a single one who is afraid of being killed by the police. Because they never have to wonder if they'll get to drive away after being stopped. They will always get to drive away.
